YMCA Milton Keynes is an independent local charity that provides supported housing for formerly homeless young adults through its 23-bed short stay hostel and 123 longer stay flats in Central Milton Keynes. The housing crisis that is evident in Milton Keynes from the growing number of street homeless but this masks an even larger issue with the ‘hidden homeless’: people sofa surfing or living in unsafe or overcrowded housing. This led to record number of over 1,000 young people coming to YMCA Milton Keynes last year for help and support with housing
But providing a safe and secure place for young people to stay is just a small part of the work of the charity. Many of the young people coming to YMCA have experienced trauma that resulted in them becoming homeless or as a result of being homeless and so YMCA Milton Keynes provides a comprehensive support programme of engagement and learning that includes Health & Wellbeing – both physical and mental, Independent Living Skills and Employment Support. But as demand for YMCA services has grown –funding, from statutory sources, has reduced.
So, YMCA Milton Keynes needs your support to maintain the services it provides to young adults. If you are participating in the Festival of Running consider seeking sponsorship from your friends, family or co-workers – because together we can change lives.
